The Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF) deployed eleven F-16's from both Leeuwarden and Volkel Air Base to Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Cold Lake, Alberta, Canada. For a period of eight weeks (1 May till 26 June) the RNLAF conducted various flying operations.
CFB Cold Lake is located in northeastern Alberta, and named after the lake it is situated near. The nearest city to Cold Lake is Edmonton on a distance of 290km. CFB Cold Lake is home to 409 "Nighthawks" and 410 "Cougars" squadron operating the CF-188 Hornet. Also based at CFB Cold Lake is 417 "Jokers" SAR squadron with CH-146 Griffon helicopters, Aerospace Engineering & Test Establishment (AETE) squadron operation various Canadian aircraft such as CF-188, CT-114 and CH-146. CFB Cold Lake also hosts the NATO Flying Training Canada (NFTC) part of 419 squadron operation with CT-155 Hawk aircraft. During the first and second week, the RNLAF trained night flying operations. From the third till sixth week, the RNLAF participated in exercise Maple Flag. In the last two weeks the RNLAF trained various operations during day time.
